THE Italian tinder-Secretary of

State for Foreign 'Affairs, Signor Folchi, has declared that the Holy See has no plans at present to create a merchant fleet.

Signor Folchi made the statement in reply to a written question submitted by a Communist member of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of Parliament.

"The Holy See," he said, "has not the least intention of creating a merchant fleet either now or in the future, though it entertains the distant possibility of acquiring emergency seafaring means in the event of those becoming necessary for the fulfilment of the missions proper to the Vatican in the religious fields and in those of charitable assistance."
