The Pope cuts down audiences

THE Pope has decided to reduce the number of his private and special audiences states an announcement issued by the office of the Maestro di Camera.

"For some time the request for Papal audiences, private, special and for groups and particular pilgrimages, have been flowing into this office in such great numbers as to make it impossible to deal with each request properly," says the announcement.

"It is therefore announced that private, special and group audiences will henceforth be granted only in absolutely extraordinary cases, since precedence must be given to members of the Sacred College of Cardinals, and to the regularly scheduled audiences with members of the Roman Curia, in which top-level affairs of the Church are handled, and then to audiences with the bishops who come to Rome on their five-year ad limina visits."

The number of general audiences is expected to be increased.
