" ORGY OF CANING " IN CATHOLIC SCHOOLS

SIR,-Cannot something be done to stop the orgy of caning, etc., in which our Catholic teachers seem to revel? Such crude methods of enforcing discipline reflect very unfavourably on the self-control and understanding of children.

That trifling breaches of discipline should be followed up by indiscriminate corporal punishment seems as unjust as it is foolish.

Foolish, because in these days, when the " Save Our Schools " slogan is blazoned across our Catholic Press, Catholic parents are antagonised by what they consider to be, in many cases, an overstepping of authority by the teacher. And this is not infrequently followed up by the withdrawal of the child from the school.

I refuse to believe that our children are more unruly than their non-Cathelic prototypes, but when such archaic methods of enforcing order have disappeared from our schools, as they are fast doing from non-Catholic ones, I feel sure it will be better for all concerned.
