President Einaudi, of Italy, made his first official visit to the Pope in the Vatican last week, the first non-royal bead of the Italian State to be formally received with all honours by the Pope. He spent half-an-hour in conversation with the Holy Father.
"We rejoice with you," the Pope told him. " and expressed the wish that under your guidance Italy, so dear to us, may as soon as possible, above all for the relief of the poor and needy, repair the ruins caused by the terrible war and carry out that duty which the Divine plan assigned to it; which history confirms and which its very geographic position in no uncertain way determines.
Italy. in fact, placed at the crossroads of the races into which mankind is sub-divided. seems almost a harbour, open to all the people to unite them with the bonds of brotherly friendship into one human family."
