THE HOUSE OF THE PELICAN, by Elizabeth Kyle, illustrated by Peggy Fortnum (Nelson, 8s. 6d.).
THE Edinburgh Festival is the setting to this charming tale. An Edinburgh of the beautiful "Royal Mile." but also a city of magic, of small intimate streets and the rnysterious House of the Pelican.
An unusually long children's story. hut I suspect, not a single page more than its young readers will enjoy.
Menuhin and Kentner
EHUDI MENUHIN and I.ouis I Keittner have in three recitals played the complete cycle of Beethoven Sonatas for violin and piano at the Royal Festival Hall during the past two weeks.
Menuhin. who is now 38, has become almost legendary and anything but the most perfect playing is subjected to very keen and severe criticism. But although no one is without fault. why were all his performances. for no apparent reason, marked by the most uncertain bowing. which so marred his playing. particularly in the fast movements?
Apart from this. the cycle might have been a memorable one, for the combined musicianship. tone and complete unanimity of thought of Kentner and Menuhin made their partnership almost unparalleled.
