Midwife Jenny Rothwell, 42. from Manchester. who was a midwife in Guatamala with the CIIR voluntary workers programme, has been awarded the MBE.
Miss Rothwell was in Guatemala from 1970 to 1980. She initially worked at the Behrhorst Clinic in Chimaltenango, a small town 50 kilometres from Guatemala City. She was based at a small clinichospital, used as a centre to train leading villagers in practical or 'empirical' medcine.
She was involved in the training of the para medics, gave lectures and practical demonstrations of medical techniques.
During her time in Central America Jenny Rothwell was involved in two earthquakes one in Nicaragua in 1972 where she briefly worked as a relief worker, the other in Guatemala in 1976 when more than 20,000 people were killed.
