FREEMASONRY BANNED

Warning by the Pope's theologian

A new warning against Freemasonry is given by the Pope's personal theologian, Fr. Mariano Cordovani, 0.P., in an article published last week in the Vatican newspaper Osservatore Romano.

Calling attention to a revival of Freemasonry in Italy and elsewhere since the war, Fr. Cordaovani writes :

" What is new in this renaissance is the rumour going the rounds in certain circles that a certain Masonic rite is no longer opposed to the Church.

" It is suggested that there exists an agreement between Freemasonry and the Church which enables Catholics to join the sect without fear of excommunication or reproof.

" The directors of this propaganda certainly know that nothing has been changed in the Church's legislation on Freemasonry; and if they continue to make this propaganda, it can only be to exploit the naivete of simple people."
