US bishops on women

by our Rome correspondent

POPE John Paul II continued his systematic meetings with "problematical" episcopal conferences this week with the convocation of American bishops to the Vatican.

The main item on the agenda is said to be a controversial document on the role of women in the church. The American bishops compiled the document some time ago but it has yet to win Rome's approval in its denunciation of the "sin of sexism".

According to Vatican reports, the Pope could call the Americans to order, reminding them that he has already expounded on the role of women in his encyclical Mulieris dignitatem.

Two weeks ago, John Paul summoned Swiss bishops for discussions. They discussed the Pope's unpopular episcopal nomination for the diocese of Chur, incorporating Zurich.
