ELECTION SUCCESSES

LOCAL election returns all over the country show that three Catholic Mayors and many Catholic Councillors have been elected.

Alderman James G. Smith, who has been elected Mayor of Eccles (Lanes), has been one of the town's two representatives on the Lancashire County Council for nine years. The other Eccles councillor, Mrs. M. M. C. Kemball, is, like Ald. Smith, a parishioners of St. Mary's, Eccles.

Mr. T. F. Fazey has been elected next year's Mayor of Chester and Ald. Simon Mahon, M.P., has been elected Mayor of Bootle, Lanes. Other successes include Mrs. Frances Brady (Labour. Hull) who is the city's first Catholic woman councillor; Mrs. Cecilia Costeho (Conservative, Forest Hill); and Mr. Bernard Dwyer (Labour, Battersea).
