passion is out of place in this tale: it required the savage sparse satire of "Vile Bodies" or "Agents and Patients".

Mr. White's talent continues to grow and mature as he writes his chronicle of post-war Dublin. This is easily the best of his three novels and can be recommended for its wit, and its flashes of poetry. He knows his Dublin well and he brings it alive in dialogue and description as few other novelists have done. I CAN'T help feeling that com
