'No Rift' At an election Press conference in Belfast, Lord

Brookeborough, the Party leader and Prime Minister, was asked about a CATHOLIC HERALD story containing a statement from Mr. William Douglas, the Party secretary, that Catholics could join the Party.

Some Unionist leaders have declared that Catholics would not be allowed to join. Lord Brookeborough was asked if there was a rift in the Party on this issue.

"There is no rift", he replied. "If a Catholic applied to be a member of the Party it would be for the local Party Association concerned to decide."
