Bishop Lindsay resigns

BISHOP Hugh Lindsay of Hexham and Newcastle this week tendered his resignation to Pope John Paul II on the grounds of ill health.

Bishop Lindsay, who was born in Newcastle in 1927, was appointed auxiliary bishop to the diocese in 1969 and became Bishop for Hexhant and Newcastle five years later.

The bishop has undergone two major back operations since 1983. After the most recent, in May 1989, he found himself unable to pursue the duties of his post with the vigour he would have wanted.

"My health has not improved enough . for me to give the diocese the service which it needs, so I have offered my resignation to the Pope. I have been invited to continue in office until the next bishop has been appointed," Bishop Lindsay said.
