On the occasion of the first anniversary of the canonisation of St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher, the postulator of the cause, Fr. Agostino della Vergine, and Mgr. Richard L. Smith, vice-rector of the English College and author of Italian lives of the two martyrs, have presented to the Pope a small but beautiful portrait of the saints.

His Holiness has accepted the gift with much pleasure and intimated to the postulators how much he had their cause at heart. He has also congratulated the painter, Silvio Silva.

Description of Picture

The portrait is described as having been faithfully reproduced according to the best contemporary evidence both as to likeness and to costume. Si. John Fisher is portrayed in his episcopal robes with the cardinal's hat—which he never wore, as he was in prison when it was sent from Rome —at his feet. St. Thomas More, a smaller

[figure, holds in one hand the great seal of the kingdom and in the other a book.
