New Ukrainian centre in London

In publishing your article of May 19 about a new centre at Holland Park, you have committed your newspaper to several gross errors and misrepresentations.

Also you demonstrated once again that despite your interest in our religious life and knowledge about our problems and aspirations, for some unknown reason you could not write about them objectively and without prejudice.

The centre at Holland Park was purchased by the Ukrainian Religious Society of St Sofia, which was properly established and registered in Great Britain a few months ago. Its objects are mainly educational.

One part of the centre will house the offshoot of the Ukrainian Catholic University established in Rome some eight years ago by Patriarch Joseph Slipyj, and blessed by Pope Paul.

The establishment of the above named society and the purchase of a centre does not have any direct connection either with Bishop Hor

nyak's attitude and policy in respect of the patriarchal system of internal administration in our Church or with his ineptitude towards. such long-standing projects as the offshoot of the above named university or the establishment of the St Sofia Society.

The centre was purchased for the sum of £305,000. Patriarch Slipyj has donated towards the purchase £245,000, and the rest was collected by the Central Patriarchal Committee. The amount of about £90,000 involves about 95 per cent of faithful in Great Britain.

If you would properly appreciate what the educational society actually means. you would not even endeavour to repeat, after some biased informers, that any such centre could be used for any political purposes, as your article clearly suggests.

There is a chapel at the centre which is being used for small services. During the Ukrainian Easter the Ukrainians in London have been using a church at Holland Park Avenue. The Easter service was attended by about 1,150 people. Mgr Mitrat I. Muzychka is a priest of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in union with Rome but not under direct Roman jurisdiction.

Felix culpa

A letter recently received from the Apostolic Delegate to Great Britain bore the date "17 Mary, '78". A Heavenly error, don't you think.
