YOUR contributor T.S. (Travel Time, October 5) attributes the phrase `it is the Mass that matters' to Matthew Arnold.
I would be grateful if he could quote the exact source. — because in Stevenson's Book of Quotations it is credited to Augustine Birrell "What then did happen at the reformation" an essay which appeared in the 19th century for April 1891.
