`No ambassador to Vatican,' says Stevenson

The statement by Governor Stevenson, Democratic candidate in the U.S. Presidential election, that if elected he would not appoint an Ambassador to the Holy See has been received at the Vatican with the usual serenity and calm. where it is pointed out that American diplomatic representation is an American internal queition which undergoes periodic changes.

It is noted that Governor Stevenson has not said that he will not appoint a personal envoy, as did President Roosevelt and President Truman.

Moreover, it is felt that Governor Stevenson cannot have failed to appreciate the Vatican's view that the personal envoy system has many defects.
