To venture out she must face the climb up 82 stairs. As she says, "It's too much when you're 80." From her dismal third floor flat she has to go down to the basement to fetch coal, and up to the fifth floor to dry clothes. However plucky they may be, old people should not have to cope with difficulties like this.

Help the Aged urgently need to promote the building of more flats designed for the needs of brave old people: where they find independence, friendship and a helpful warden on call if needed. .
