TWO GREAT priests deaths have been reported recently, Fr Michael O'Connor, founder of the 'Catholic Enquiry Centre', and Fr Clifford Howell 9J, the liturgist. Side by side with others of like stature, SFr Bernard Basset Si, Fr Peter Blake SJ, Fr William Lawson Si:, Fr Agnellus Andrew, Fr Vincent Whelan,) these priests gave inestimable service, not only to the Church in general. but to the numerous members of the Cell Movement of the 1940s and 1950s.
The influence of their convictions, of the sublime stature of their priesthood, and of their tremendous personalities,. was lasting and farreaching, and may perhaps be their finest memorial.
I need only mention two outstanding examples, whose subsequent vocations were vastly different, yet who would both unhesitatingly acknowledge the influence of these great priests upon their lives, — Mrs Monica Comerford and Sr Mary Gerson.
There must be countless others whose way of life was profoundly changed and strengthened by the same influence.
