Refugees concern Pope in early Lent letter

POPE John Paul Ii has urged "a careful re-examination of conscience with regard to our attitude toward exiles and refugees" in an unusually early message for Lent of 1990.

The message was released by the National Conference of American Catholic Bishops in Washington.

"The enormous and increasing flow of refugees is a painful reality which no longer touches only certain regions of the world, but extends to every continent," Pope John Paul writes. "Although much has been done,
