Call for truth commission

THE CATHOLIC hierarchy in Kenya has joined in the call for the establishment of a truth and reconciliation commission to redress abuses committed by the country's former government.

But, the bishops have insisted also that there should be no retributions for past crimes, The calls for investigations, raised by human rights' organisations, some religious leaders, and the general public, came as the newly-elected government found secret torture chambers, revealing a disturbing record of abuses under the government of former President Daniel Arap Moi, that had been concealed from the public eye for years.

The Kenyan bishops said that any commission should learn from the South African example and in that way, the commission will be helping the present government to avoid repeating the mistake committed by the last government.
