Iraq war 'will harm dialogue'

AN ALGERIAN prelate has said he fear a war against Iraq will jeopardise dialogue with Islam.

Archbishop Henri Tessier of Algiers, who was in Rome for his ad limina visit, said that Christians and Muslims in Algeria were gravely concerned about the situation in Iraq. He said that the

peaceful relations between the two religions could be jeopardised by warfare, and voiced the hope that every possible diplomatic effort would be expended to avoid military action.

The archbishop said that the small Catholic community in Algeria was delighted to see Cardinal Roger Etchegaray's meeting with Saddam Hussein, since that visit showed the Vatican's determination to avoid war. He said, that on behalf of Algerian Catholics, he would tell the Pope that we appreciate his efforts for peace, and assure him of the esteem in which many Muslims in our region hold him, because of the activities.
