Taiwan denies China report

THE TAIWANESE government has been quick to dismiss a report that the Vatican is willing to sever diplomatic ties in order to improve rights for the Church in mainland China.

Richard Shih, spokesman of the Foreign Ministry, said: "Mgr Ambrose Madtha, the Vatican's representative to Taiwan, had arrived in that country to take up his post last week."

Mr Shih insisted "the ties between the Holy See and Taiwan have been strong".
