MORE than 7 million dual channel homes watched the special ITN and BBC tributes to the late Pope John XXIII on the day of his death, June 3, report Television Audience Measurement Limited.
The ITN programme, screened iffimediately following the 9 p.m. news bulletin, was seen by 5.133,000 ITV/FIFIC homes. The BBC presentation, screened later in the evening from 10.14 p.m. to 10.35 p.m. had a dual channel homes viewing audience of 2.128,000.
On the following day, 2.253.000 ITV 1313C homes saw the BBC coverage (from 6.21 p.m. to 6.50 p.m.) of the removal of Pope John's body to St. Peter's.
Both ITV and BBC also screened special programmes covering the funeral service on Thursday, June 6. For the BBC presentation from 6 p.m. to 7.02 p.m., there was a dual channel homes viewing audience of 2,629.000. A total of 2,020,000 1TV. BBC homes in 10 ITV areas were tuned to the funeral on II V — the live broadcast (from 6.06 p.m, to 6.55 p.m.) in four ITV areas being seen by 1.025,000 homes and an edited recording screened in a further six ITV areas later in the evening watched by 995,000.
