WHERE TO STAY: Lacken House, on Dublin Road (tel: Kilkenny 65611) is a restaurant with award-winning cuisine and comfortable bedrooms. Prices, including breakfast, £22 per person per night. Dinner around £30 a head.

WHERE 10 EAT: Edward 1.angton's pub on John Street is plush and friendly. Meals are served in the glassed-in restaurant at the rear. The Pump House on Parliament Street does good lunches. And Tyran's Bridge House Bar, near St John's Bridge, is a Victorian pub with its original fittings preserved intact. HOW TO GET THERE: B&I sail to Dublin from Holyhead and to Rosslare from Pembroke Dock.
