Angolans facing starvation

CAPUCHIN missionaries in Angola are warning that thousands of people there are in danger of starvation.

Fr Giovanni Lazzara said the situation "worsens day by day". Men, women and children are living in "subhuman conditions" and are in desperate need of assistance, he said.

Some areas of the country have not yet been reached by the humanitarian organisations, and the situation is deteriorating. Hunger also threatens Angolan refugees who fled to Zambia.

The long civil war between government forces and the Unita rebels ended earlier this year.
