Prison labour helps youth day
CANADIAN prisoners are preparing more than 200.000 "pilgrim's backpacks," red nylon bags, containing candles and other religious materials for World Youth Day in Toronto next month.
A spokeswoman said some of the prisoners had committed serious crime, like murder and rape. Many have problems with addiction or with controlling anger.
The Canadian authorities have allocated £700,000 to the rehabilitation programme that enables prisoners to participate in productive activities and learn a manual trade.
Hundreds of prisoners asked to prepare the backpacks.
