How sluethe Church interpret the first chapter of Genesis ?
The Church teaches that the first three chapters of Genesis contain real history about the origin of the visible universe, but allows that so far as the first chapter is concerned, it is not the
intention of the sacred writer to explain the inmost constitution of things in a scientific way, but to teach their origin from God the Creator in a way that could be grasped by simple minds. In particular it is permissible to interpret the " days " of creation as indefinitely long periods of time. But the Church approves of no interpretation which does not find iii these first chapters the revelation of certain fundamental religious truths, such as the special creadon of man (i.e., at least the infusion of a human soul into a body already prepaied), the formation of the first man from the first woman, and the unity of the human race.
