THE POPE'S NEW YEAR

THOUSANDS ot tram drivers from all parts of Rome gathered in St. Peter's Square on New Year's Day to offer New Year wishes to the Holy Father and, in turn, to be blessed by him from his window overlooking the square.

The Holy Father spent the last hour of 1958 in his chapel with members of the Papal household. After leading the Te beam for the end of the old year, he led the Veal Creator asking God's blessing on 1959. On Monday the Pope will once again leave Vatican City, this time to attend the performance of an opera based on T. S. Eliot's "Murder in the Cathedral"
