Contraception pamphlet

Your correspondent, Mr A. F. Brookes (December 19) urges the need for pro-contraception pamphlets, such. as that published some years ago by the self-styled Catholic Renewal Movement.

For the benefit of those who may believe that this society has the sanction of the authorities, as the title falsely indicates, may I quote below a press statement issued by the Archbishop of Birmingham on September 1, 1970. when the pamphlet advocating contraception was first brought to his notice:

"This leaflet has neither the approval nor the support of the. Church. The persons who have published it were so advised when they informed me of their intention some months ago. "The teaching of the Church is now and has always been (my italics) that artificial contraception is wrong in principle ..."
