200 policemen attend Mass

THE Chief Constable and a num ' bcr of J.Ps. went to High Mass with 200 policemen on Sunday in St. Chad's Cathedral, Birmingham.

1 he occasion was the first annual parade of the Catholic members of the city's police force.

Celebrant of the Mass was Fr. P. S. Wyles, of Wolverhampton, son of Chief Inspector Wytes. officer in charge of the Summons and Warrant Department of Victoria Courts, Birmingham.

Archbishop Masterson prea hing. expressed the hope that Bir Mgharn's police would never be 4alled upon, like the police in certain ther countries, to carry out orders contrary to the law of God. " In many countries the work of the police consists not in protecting the rights and liberties of the individual citizen, but in taking them away.

"Fortunately, in this country the Christian principles which underlie the constitution arc a safeguard for indivdual liberty."
