Church built by laymen

Cardinal Alfrink, Archbishop of Utrecht, has commended to the care of four laymen the financial responsibility for building a new parish church in a future suburb of Enschede, still at the drawing stage. Enschede is a big industrial city near the Dutch German border.

It is the first time in the history of the Catholic Church in the Netherlands that laymen have been assigned to build a church, a job which usually has been put on the shoulders of the parish priest.

The appointment of laymen to raise the church building funds constitutes a part of the growing conviction that the commercial management of the Church is a layman's job, not the priest's.
