PILGRIMS from all over the UnitedKingdom flocked to St. Helens on Sunday to hear Mass in honour of the Venerable Dominic Barberi at St. Anne's Monastery, Sutton,. The process for the beatification of Fr. Barberi is currently nearing completion in Rome. Plans to hold Mass in the open air had to he revised because of heavy rain. and three indoor masses in all had to he said to accommodate the 5,000 pilgrims who came from London, Liverpool, South Wales, Newcastle and Birmingham. Sermon at High Mass was preached by Mgr. Laurence Curry, of Liverpool. A Passionist priest at St. Anne's, told me this week that the monastery had been prominent in the cause for the beatification of Fr. Barberi who converted Cardinal Newman. It was Fr. Dominic who chose the site for the monastery, and his body is buried there. Two miracles, attributed. to the intercession of Fr. Barbera were accepted last year by the Vatican's medical experts. Both miracles took place in Italy, One involved the recovery froma brain tumour of a Ptissionist student for the priesthood.
