Herald Editor moves to BBC

MISS FRANCES GUMLEY — above — the editor of the Catholic Herald, was named last week as the new Roman Catholic assistant to the head of religious broadcasting at the BBC. The appointment represents something of a break with tradition for the BBC which has until now always selected a priest to fill the post.

Past incumbents include Bishop Agnellus Andrew, Mgr Pat McEnroe, and Mgr Crispin Hollis. Miss Gumley, who will• take up the post in a few weeks time, commented: "I realise there may be some surprise at the appointment of a layperson but I hope on reflection, it will not seem all that strange. I see it as an encouraging recognition of the maturity of the laity.

"Although I am sad to be leaving the Herald and the many friends with whom I have worked in my two years as editor and three years on the staff before that, I am looking forward to the challenge of serving the Catholic community through my new post.

"I am sure the Herald will go from strength to strength and continue to provide a valuable service of information and forum for discussion for committed Catholics in this country and abroad."
