Clarifying the code

From the public relations officer of the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth SIR — Over the past two weeks in the Herald it has been asserted that because the statement of ethics at the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth makes no mention of referrals for abortion that such referrals are permitted at the hospital. This is not the case. In the statement it is clearly noted that the absence of a reference to a particular procedure or treatment does not imply that it is unimportant or permissible. .

It should of course be clearly noted that abortions are not performed at the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth.

Yours faithfully, MARK THOMAS London NW8
