BISHOP GIVES WARNING TO EAST BERLIN

THE first goal of those who oppress the Church in large areas of the world today is to loosen and then destroy all ties with Rome." said Bishop Dopfner of Berlin during a sermon given at Corpus Christi church in the Eastern Sector of the city. Throughout history, the first step in the attempt to destroy Christianity had been to attack the papacy, he added.

" We are confident that the Church cannot be destroyed." he declared. " Persecution may lessen the numbers of the faithful, but it only strengthens our confidence in the existence of the Church."

There could be no compromise with Godlessness, Bishop Dopfner stated. He quoted Communist attempts to substitute atheistic ceremonies for the Sacraments (such as atheistic baptism, and the Jugendbeelhe parodying Confirmation), and said: " We cannot permit our children to suffer from this feeble mockery of religion."
