SIR —Your Irish correspondent says this week, that the difference between Fianna Fail and Fine Gael is " his

torical only." This phrase might mean a number of things, so perhaps you will allow me to say that Fianna Fail aims at an independent Republic for all Ireland and economic self-sufficiency as far as possible, while Fine Gael desires membership of the British Commonwealth and virtual free trade.
