Bishops' warning

SOUTH AFRICA's Catholic bishops this week warned President FW de Klerk that the country would not tolerate a failure to root out those responsible for the Boipatong massacre and steer a path to peace.

The bishops' statement, which coincided with the burial of 36 of the 42 victims of the massacre in the Boipatong township south of Johannesburg last week, when supporters of Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi's Inkatha Freedom Party attacked residents with knives and spears, said the nation had been shaken out of its complacency over its future.

The bishops called on the government to offer solutions not excuses for the violence in the townships, which the authorities had done little to curtail.
