As a result of the schools campaign a large number of candidates for Parliament have been impressed with the justice and strength of the Catholic claims. Now we must prepare to do the same with candidates in the forthcoming local elections. That is the essence of a message from Bishop Beck to the CATHOLIC HERALD this
week.
The Hierarchy's Action Committee. said Bishop Beck, " are now engaged in collating copies of the replies of candidates to the questions put to them, and are considering the best method of work to obtain relief for Catholic schools.
Second stage
" In the meantime, the Committee consider it most important that the organisations which have been built up, and the interest which has been aroused, in the course of the campaign, should be maintained.
" Diocesan Action Committees will, subject to the directions of their Bishops, wish to decide themselves how best to follow up the, replies given by those elected to Parliament : but in any event the Committee are of the opinion that arrangements should now be made to bring the Catholic case effectively to the attention of the candidates in the forthcoming local elections."
And in a Pastoral letter fast Sunday, Bishop Beck stated : " Excel. lent work has been done and we must now prepare for the second stage in the campaign."
