to the Polish Bishops
The Polish Government on Monday last issued a sharply-worded warning amounting to an ultimatum to the Hierarchy to " stop interfering " with its reorganisation of Carltas, the Church's charitable organisation, which it recently seized.
An official statement
warned : " The Government
will not tolerate the abuse of Church authority and of religious feelings of any kind of anti-State plotting."
By this, the statement made dear, it meant the endeavours of the Church leaders to ensure that priests are not misled into serving on Government hoards for the administration of the new body and their refusal to recognise it in its reorganised form.
The Bishops, it alleged, are " sabotaging " the new Caritas management and using " brutal pressure, threats and repressions" against priests who join the now boards.
One Bishop, Mgr. Kowalsik, is already under house arrest on similar charges and further arrests are expected.
