Sir, Fr Fitzsimmons' latest rant against the direction of the Papacy and his own critics in general, was, for me, notable for his suggestion that he has somehow been in touch with me "to explain that a lack of enthusiasm for one man's style of papacy (ie Pius Xll's) does not add up to a denial of the dogma of papal infallibility". (Letters Feb 25). Let us not forget however when last September Fr Fitzsimmons chose the columns of The Herald (Glasgow) to register his dislike of the said Pontiff's papal style, he disingenuously added "lam not a fan of that kind of 'infallible-oneman-bandism' ."
That comment though quite unnecessary, was at least totally consistent with Fr Fitzsimmons' oft repealed hostility towards what he coldly describes as the Church's -Central Authority" and what he perceives as its "tensions" with the local Church.
My shocked response in the same secular newspaper was immediate, but it evoked no reaction whatsoever from Fr Fitzsimmons either publicly or privately.
Yours faithfully, RONALD MACDONALD. Bishopbriggs, Glasgow.
