French Camps Get a Bad Mark

The monthly magazine of the Vatican Information Bureau, Ecclesla, reports that prisoners of war camps in North Africa have been visited by a Vatican delegate.

The delegate found that the conditions of Italian prisoners in Americanrun camps were excellent. Conditions were, however, described as not completely satisfactory in the camps under French control in Tunis and elsewhere.

" Repugnant corporal punishments are inflicted there. These are all the more humiliating as this punishment is given by natives."

The magazine expresses the hope that there will be no repetition of such happenings and that treatment will be based in future on the foundations of benevolence and mutual respect.
