ham Market celebrates
AN EX1 ENSION to St Dominic's church, Downham Market was blessed and officially opened yesterday by Bishop Clark of East Anglia.
St Dominic's was the centre of a controversy surrounding the liturgy in 1975, when the parish priest at the time, Fr Oswald Baker, was removed by Bishop Grant of Northampton (whose diocese then covered East Anglia), for refusing to implement the revised rite of Mass.
For a time, the bishop had turned a blind eye to Fr Baker's insistence on using the Latin Tridentine rite, but the need to expand the parish to include East Dereham led to action being taken.
The extension was necessary because of an influx of Catholics caused by the expansion of the town, and the booklet published to mark the occasion is completely free from the acrimony that afflicted the parish five years ago.
The present parish priest, Fr Peter Brown, came to St Dominic's in 1978. it is his first church as parish priest.
