Repairs to shrine will begin soon

THE HISTORIC Chapels Trust has announced that urgent repair work on Our Lady of Lourdes shrine in Blackpool will begin on January 7.

The first phase of repairs will involve the restoration of the roof, doors and windows and some retouching of damaged interior paintwork. These works will cost an estimated £100,000.

A second phase of site renovation is also planned which will include the installation of new bathroom facilities, a kitchenette and modem heating mechanisms. The total estimated cost of the repairs is £650,000.

The Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes was designed by the distinguished architect F X Velarde. The shrine has been empty since the 1990s.

The Historic Chapels Trust acquired the site in 2002 from the Diocese of Lancaster. The shrine is now listed as a Grade II building.
