HAVING read with interest your article "Cardinal Virtues", February 25, may I he permitted to put the record straight on one small point.
The Cardinal's father — and mine — was not an agnostic, as has been mistakenly stated by the Press on several occasions.
He was in fact baptised and brought up in the Church of England:
The late Archdeacon of Lindisfarne. the Reverend H Bates, who. was then vicar al the Anglican Jesmond Parish Church, Newcastle on Tyne visited ou.r house regularly at the end of my father's life, frequently bringing him communion.
We children wereall brought up as Catholics. and thanks to both parents. enjoyed the benefits of a throughly Christian home.
