In response to a request from the Peruvian hierarchy. the Holy Father has named St. Joseph as Patron of Peru.
The country's devotion to him dates back to 1560, when a Confraternity of St. Joseph was founded al the Cathedral of Lima. When Peru achieved its independence. the national Constitutional Congress of 1828 issued a decree declaring St. Joseph Patron of the republic.
