THE PRIOR of Worth Abbey. Sussex, Dom Dominic Gaisford, OSB, is to become superior of the abbey's mission in Lima, Peru, at the end of October.
The appointment was announced by the Abbot, Dom Victor Farwell, at the annual general meeting of Worth Abbey Lay Community, last weekend. It was necessitated by the sudden death last month of Dam Fabian Glencross, who was due to take over as superior in Lima in November, and was visiting Worth, along with other monks from the mission, for the abbatial election.
The present superior in Lima, Dom Edward Cruise, will return to Worth next month, and after a much needed break, will take over control of the Lay Corn
munity. a post currently filled by Dom Dominic. who is also novice master.
Abbot Farwell said it was a measure of the esteem with which the Lay Community is held by the monastery that he was making known the news of Dom Dorninic's appointment synonymously to the Lay and monastic communities.
Dom Victor said he had a vision of a future for the lay community in which it would fulfil a far bigger role, with membership akin to Taize, and dependent communities in other parts of the country.
He saw present lay community, which numbers more than 100 members and has been in existence for ten years, as being in its infancy.
