Church in Ukraine suppressed

The Vatican Radio reported last week that the Russians have arrested nearly all the 3,600 Ukrainian priests and either put them in concentration camps or deported them to Siberia.

All the Ukrainian bishops were arrested. brought to a mass trial in Kiev and sentenced to long terms of imprisonment, it said.

"The Catholic Church in the Ukraine. which had more than 5,000,000 faithful," said the radio, " has been totally suppressed and the Church buildings and property have been taken over by the Russian Orthodox Church under the direct control of the Russian secret police."
