New Year honours for papal knights

FOUR papal knights are amongst those decorated in the New Year's Honours List. Michael Fitzherbert-Brocholes received the OBE for public service in Lancashire, along with Dr James Hanratty, until recently medical director of St Joseph's Hospice, Hackney. The other two papal knights honoured were Jim James, General Secretary of Catholic Youth Services, who received the MBE, and Dr Michael Strode, founder of the Handicapped Children's Pilgrimage Trust, who also was awarded the MBE.

Other Catholics included on the list were: Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath Admiral Sir Julian Oswald, who takes over as First Sea Lord in May; Companion of the Bath — Major-General Christopher Tyler, late of the Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers; CBE Mgr John Williams, principal Catholic chaplain to the Army; Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George Michael Daly, HM Ambassador to Costa Rica; OBE — Hester Mary Hallaway, principal of Trinity and All Saints' College, Leeds, Lt-Col Roger Theis of the Royal Military Police; MBE Major James Sharp of the Gordon Highlanders.

The editor of the Church Times, Bernard Palmer, was awarded the OBE.
