GOD THE FATHER — a detail (above) from the magnificent Ghent Altarpiece, completed in 1432, which is believed to be, at least partly, by Jan Van Eyck.
However, the creator of the Altarpiece remains shrouded in mystery and even the first recorded mention of the Altarpiece, in 1495, reports that the unknown artist lies buried before the Altarpiece Itself .
The Altarpiece still has pride of place in the building for which it was commissioned the St Bavo Church in Ghent.
This image of God the Father is at the centre of the Altarpiece, with Our Lady and St John the Baptist to His right and left.
From Van Eyck and the founders of Early Netherlandish Painting by Otto Pacht, published this week by Harvey Miner at £48.
