THE VATICAN is L0 make a resounding contribution to the global Live Earth spectacular to be staged this Saturday July 7, the second anniversary of the London bombings.
Taking part will be the boys' choir of the London Oratory School Schola which sang on the soundtracks of the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings films.
The choir is flying from London especially for the event. With arrangements for Live Earth nearing completion, the Vatican agreed at the last minute to participate in the event provided that sacred, liturgical music was given priority over rock and pop — and that the sacred dimension of creation and the natural order were given due emphasis in discussions of the planetary "crisis" facing mankind.
Television audiences will see highlights of a new Requiem by a young Italian composer to be performed at the Basilica of St John San Giovanni in Lateran, the official seat of the Pope in Rome.
Lending added poignancy to proceedings is the fact that the boys were personally touched by the tragedy when one of the young teachers in their school lost his sister in the bombings on the London Underground.
